The From Burnout to Recovery Show with Dr. Kate: Your Journey to Burnout Recovery Starts Here: Episode 38 - Don't Just Survive...Thrive with Guest Michelle RisserIn Episode 38, Michelle Risser joins us to talk about recovering from PTSD and secondary trauma. In an effort to bounce back, she dove into work, parenting, and chores, removing all the fun things she used to enjoy doing.  When she recognized that wasn’t working, she dialed back on the survival mode and went back to trying to thrive by doing those things she really loved doing like working out, going out with friends, and other great self care activities. Another setback came, though, with a rare cancer diagnosis and then COVID, so she continued to work doing telehealth appointments with clients.

Finding joy in doing everyday things, even if they’re hard or challenging things.  In trying to care for others, we have to care for ourselves before we can help others, too.  Being a mom AND a helping professional, you simply must build in time for rest and recreation! Practicing microstrategies throughout her day, so that there are pockets of refreshment and rejuvenation all day long. Limiting multi-task moments, practice breathing slow and deep, filling water bottles, planning in advance simple ways to impact your self care for the day.  Live in the present. Be aware of how your senses are affected and think about how they make you feel or ponder.
