Dr. Joanne Stern


Joanne Stern, PhD has been a psychotherapist in private practice for more than twenty years, dedicated to helping individuals, couples, groups, families and teens to learn, heal, change and grow. In 2002, she became an EEG neurofeedback practitioner, working with kids and their families in a wide variety of childhood issues, including attention deficit disorder, anxiety and depression.

Teacher and Consultant, Dr. Stern has taught college-level parenting courses focused on topics such as communication, discipline, drugs and alcohol, and self-esteem. She has also taught PAIRS, an intensive 120-hour relationship course for couples, and has held workshops on drugs and alcohol, eating disorders and grief and loss. In addition, Dr. Stern has consulted with local and international corporations and nonprofit organizations in team building, mission and strategy planning, and conflict resolution. She is a certified addictions counselor and uses both MBTI Myers Briggs Type Indicator, a personality assessment, and the Virginia Satir concepts for therapy and personal growth in her private practice as well as her work with organizations.

Speaker & Expert Guest, Dr. Stern speaks to parents, families, teens and educational professionals across the country. Her presentations on Parenting Is a Contact Sport illuminate simple but powerful concepts through real-life stories, and her speaking engagements take her to parent groups, schools, and social, religious and nonprofit organizations. Dr. Stern also presents regularly on a variety of therapy-related subjects, the process and efficacy of EEG neurofeedback, and the topic of her dissertation: mothers in the workplace. Audiences have included the Organization Development Networks national convention, the Given Institute, the Northwestern University Rocky Mountain Alumni Association and the Aspen Mountain Club. She is a regular guest on local TV and radio.

Community Contributor, she has served as a board member at the regional mental health center, the local crisis pregnancy center, the local substance abuse prevention organization, and Aspen Country Day School. She is a member of the American Counseling Association, is affiliated with EEG Spectrum International, Inc. and is Board Certified in Professional Counseling. Dr. Stern holds a bachelors and a masters degree in German from Northwestern University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She also earned masters degrees in theology and counseling psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a PhD in Human and Organizational Systems from Fielding Graduate Institute.

Dr. Stern and her husband, Terry Hale, live in Aspen, Colorado, where she raised her two daughters, Carol and Andrea. Parenting is a Contact Sport is her first book.
