The College Board Helps You Understand What the PSAT/NMSQT Score Means and Provides Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the SAT and College. Is your child ready for college? Every year, about 4 million 10th- and 11th-grade students take the PSAT/NMSQT®, which determines qualification for the National Merit® Scholarship Program and is good practice for the SAT. Students taking the PSAT/NMSQT have access to more than $230 million annually through the College Board’s scholarship partners. The PSAT/NMSQT also plays a key role in college readiness. In early December, when students get their PSAT/NMSQT score reports online, they can find out which skills to focus on to prepare for the SAT®.

WHY DO SENIORS REFUSE HELP? Expert Reveals Data from a Recent Study Published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society with Dr. Lee Lindquist. Older adults who have increasing and unmet home-based needs or are reluctant to accept help may find themselves in an unsafe living situation. This refusal to accept support is not only dangerous for older adults, but it also weighs heavily on their families. Northwestern Medicine Geriatrics researchers set out to better understand this reluctant behavior by going directly to the source, adults aged 65 and older. The objective of this study was to understand the perspectives of older adults about accepting help at home and the fears related to the potential loss of independence. She will discuss the results of this research study and how both older adults and their caregivers, physicians and loved ones can utilize the findings to overcome these barriers. Ultimately, the goal of this research is for older adults to remain in their own homes if safely possible and feel comfortable asking for and accepting needed assistance to allow them to age in place successfully.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN VISITING YOUR AGING PARENT Senior Living Expert Shares Signs That Your Loved One Needs More Assistance with Cindy Baier. According to the Institute on Aging, nearly one third of seniors live alone and their physical limitations and prevalence of depression are likely to increase with age. The AARP reports that nearly 90 percent of seniors want to stay in their home and “age in place”, even when they need assistance. It’s easy for parents to hide their day-to-day challenges over the phone or during quick visits, but the holiday season offers more time for you to see things as they are. This is a great opportunity to check in and see whether your aging parents are struggling to complete their daily, and necessary, activities. Many signs provide clues to physical, cognitive or emotional changes in your loved one. Poor hygiene, missed appointments or misplacing items can be a sign of cognitive difficulties. If your loved one is reluctant to leave the house or accept visitors, they may be suffering from depression. Other signs are in plain sight. The garage, kitchen, bedroom, and medicine cabinet all offer hints that your parents need extra help and that senior living might be the key to a better quality of life. She will share practical tips, resources, and her own personal experience of looking for signs that an aging parent may need assistance.
